Now I don’t want to get tangled up in an existential argument, here. The nature of reality and identity will have to wait for another time. However, just reflect over the last couple of days. Think about a situation when you were relaxed (taking a deep bath, maybe). Contemplate a situation when you were strained (your PC kept crashing). Think about a situation when you were livid (your PC still kept crashing and the technical support desk suggested you try switching it off and back on again). Think about all those situations: was it in truth the same ‘me’ who occupied each of those little moments in time? Is the fuming ‘me’ the same as the cheerful ‘me’? For most of us, the answer is no. We aren’t the same person from one day to the next, and on our more chaotic days, we’re not even the same individual from one moment to the next.

Walt Whitman put it most succinctly, I think, when he wrote ‘I contain multitudes’.
